Cataracts can occur in children as well in as young as newborn babies. It can either affect one eye or both eyes. It can be caused due to hereditary issues or due to maternal infections or drug intake during pregnancy. If not treated early, it may lead to squint, nystagmus or lazy eye.
Timely surgery is essential to remove the cataract in children and clear the visual axis. It is also important for the child to wear glasses after surgery and start treatment for any underlying amblyopia or lazy eye if present.
